Japan Through The Seasons

The Beauty of Autumn in Japan

Autumn transforms Japan into a landscape of deep reds, warm golds, and brilliant oranges. As cooler temperatures gradually move across the country, forests, mountains, temple gardens, and historic streets take on an entirely new character. From the northern landscapes of Hokkaido to the celebrated gardens and temples of Kyoto, the changing foliage creates one of Japan’s most atmospheric seasons and an ideal time to explore both cities and countryside.

The season is deeply connected to Japan’s appreciation of nature and change. Known as koyo, the autumn leaves are celebrated much like cherry blossoms in spring, drawing people outdoors to admire landscapes at their seasonal peak. Temple illuminations, harvest festivals, countryside walks, and visits to traditional gardens offer different ways to experience the season, while the comfortable climate makes autumn particularly suited to cultural exploration, hiking, and journeys through rural Japan.

Autumn is also one of the richest periods in the Japanese culinary calendar. Mushrooms, chestnuts, sweet potatoes, persimmons, rice from the new harvest, seasonal fish, and mountain produce appear across regional cuisine. Restaurants and ryokan adapt their menus to reflect the changing landscape, bringing the colours and flavours of autumn to the table. Combining spectacular scenery, cultural traditions, and exceptional seasonal gastronomy, autumn reveals Japan at its most warm, expressive, and contemplative.
