Unique Experience
The yakatabune is a traditional Japanese houseboat that has been used for private dining and river entertainment since the Edo period. Historically associated with merchants, artists, and cultural figures, these vessels provided a setting for social gatherings along Tokyo's waterways while offering a distinctive perspective on the city.
Today, the tradition continues in a modern form, combining the heritage of river cruising with contemporary standards of comfort, hospitality, and cuisine.
Guests board a private yakatabune for a 2.5-hour cruise along the Sumida River and into Tokyo Bay, passing landmarks such as Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge as the city illuminates after dark. On board, a private sushi chef prepares a seasonal omakase menu at the counter, crafting each course individually and serving it directly to guests throughout the journey. Counter seating allows close observation of the chef's technique and interaction throughout the meal, while the changing views provide a continuous backdrop to the experience. Depending on the season, the route may also offer views of cherry blossoms lining sections of the river.
By combining traditional river culture with contemporary Japanese dining, the experience offers a perspective on Tokyo that extends beyond its streets and landmarks. The private setting, direct engagement with the chef, and ever-changing scenery create a memorable introduction to one of the city's longstanding traditions.
