Yunokawa Onsen is one of Hokkaido’s most established hot spring districts, known for its mineral-rich waters and coastal setting near Hakodate. The area has long been valued as a place of relaxation, where geothermal activity and the surrounding natural environment come together to create a distinctive onsen culture. During winter, steam rising from the hot springs contrasts with the snowy landscape, highlighting the region’s unique relationship with its natural surroundings.

The experience begins with time spent enjoying the hot springs before continuing on foot through the tranquil environment surrounding the onsen district. Following quiet pathways into a more natural setting, guests encounter areas where geothermal water flows through the landscape even during the coldest months. Along the route, it is possible to observe Japanese macaques that gather near naturally heated streams, drawn by the warmth of the water during winter. From a respectful distance, visitors can watch the animals interact within their environment while learning about the relationship between local wildlife and the region’s geothermal features. The combination of snow, steam, and natural scenery creates a distinctive seasonal atmosphere.

Bringing together onsen culture, wildlife observation, and winter landscapes, the experience offers a unique perspective on Hokkaido’s natural environment. The encounter with the macaques provides a memorable complement to the restorative qualities of the hot springs themselves.
