WOOD-TURNING EXPERIENCE

Yamanaka lacquerware is one of Japan’s most respected lacquerware traditions, originating in Kaga City in Ishikawa Prefecture and known for its refined woodworking techniques.

Developed over centuries, the craft combines practicality with artistic precision, with each stage of production requiring specialized skills passed down through generations. Kawakita Workshop continues this tradition through a commitment to meticulous handcrafting and the preservation of traditional techniques.

The visit begins with an introduction to the workshop and the processes involved in creating Yamanaka lacquerware, from wood turning and lacquer application to decorative finishing. Guests have the opportunity to observe artisans at work on traditional lathes while learning about the techniques that distinguish the craft. The workshop is also associated with Mr. Yoshizo Kawakita, a Living National Treasure whose mastery reflects the exceptional precision for which Yamanaka lacquerware is known. A limited number of participants may take part in hands-on activities on the workshop floor, while additional guests can explore the upstairs gallery and view completed works.

Combining observation, participation, and access to practicing craftsmen, the experience provides a well-rounded introduction to one of Japan’s most highly regarded craft traditions.

The opportunity to encounter both the process and the finished works offers a deeper appreciation of the skill required at every stage of production.
