Hakuba Valley is one of Japan’s most renowned alpine destinations and gained international recognition as a venue for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Comprising ten interconnected ski resorts, the region offers a diverse range of terrain, from gentle beginner slopes to advanced alpine runs and off-piste areas. Its combination of extensive skiing infrastructure and dramatic mountain scenery has established Hakuba as a leading winter destination in Japan.

The experience centers around exploring the valley’s ski resorts, all accessible with a shared lift pass that allows convenient movement between different mountains and terrain types. Skiers and snowboarders can spend the day enjoying groomed runs, higher elevation courses, and varied landscapes suited to a range of abilities. Beyond the slopes, Hakuba offers a selection of restaurants, bars, and mountain lodges that contribute to a lively après-ski atmosphere, while nearby hot springs provide an opportunity to experience a traditional onsen setting surrounded by winter scenery. The journey can also include a visit to Jigokudani Monkey Park, where wild Japanese macaques are often seen bathing in naturally heated pools during the colder months.

Together, these experiences showcase the breadth of winter activities available in the region, combining world-class skiing with distinctive cultural and natural attractions. The result is a well-rounded introduction to one of Japan’s most celebrated mountain landscapes.
